SCHOOL students are on alert after a 15-year-old girl was attacked by a man on a recreation ground.

The girl was walking across The Warren, in Valley Drive, Gravesend, at about 8.30am on Tuesday when a man tried to drag her in to the bushes.

Police said the attacker cycled past the girl and disappeared around a corner - she then saw his bike on the ground as he asked for the time. It is thought he lunged but after a struggle she escaped.

A police spokesperson said: "He did not make any reference to his intentions, although the girl was extremely scared."

Ten schools in the area were alerted and asked to warn pupils.

Police ruled out any connection with a series of incidents across Northfleet and Gravesend in January, when children were being approached by a man in a car.

The girl's attacker is white, aged 20 to 27, with short dark hair and big brown eyes. He was clean-shaven and slim, wearing a dark jacket and jeans.

The man had a dark-coloured mountain bike with thin tyres and came from the direction of shops in Livingstone Road.

Call police on 01622 690 690 or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
