A 27-YEAR-OLD man has been sentenced to two and half years in jail for inflicting grievous bodily harm on a football fan.

Ben Turner, of Downs Road, Istead Rise, was sentenced at Maidstone Crown Court on today (January 22).

He was found guilty last month of inflicting grievous bodily harm on Jim Parkinson, who was left with permanent brain damage after Mr Turner punched him outside the taxi rank in New Road, Gravesend in May 2008, following a cup final between Ebbsfleet United and Torquay.

Friend Ryan Bell, 29, who admitted affray for kicking another man on the floor during the incident, was jailed for 12 months.

Judge Martin Joy described the offence as "completely unnecessary and sickening".
