A POST office and store has won a highly-prized industry award.

Singlewell Post Office, Singlewell Road, Gravesend, has been named in the top 100 independent retailers in the UK by the Independent Achiever's Academy (IAA).

Store manager, Saf Sathi, 41, who runs the business with his wife Savita, 40, was delighted.

He said: "I saw the application in an industry magazine and thought I would just give it a go. It is the first time I have entered so I was delighted to make it to the finals."

The couple have run the store for three years, but previously managed a newsagent and off-license in Rochester for more than 20 years.

Mr Sathi added: "I guess retail is in the blood."

The finals were held at the Royal Banqueting Hall in Whitehall where the winners in the 12 specific categories each shop was judged on were announced last week.

Singlewell Post Office missed out on a category title, but Mr Sathi was pleased to be one of only 18 shops in the South East to receive recognition.

Kate Dickenson, IAA Project manager, added: "The IAA Top-100 is a way of congratulating local shops on their achievements.

"We believe the vitality of the independent shopkeeper and their staff is reflected in these 100 shops, demonstrating the strength in depth of the UK's retail sector.
