A MATHS teacher has returned to school a hero after being named the best secondary school teacher in the UK.

Dan Walton, 34, who works at St John's Comprehensive, in Gravesend, received the prestigious award on BBC2.

The advanced skills teacher at the Roman Catholic comprehensive had been given the Plato award during a surprise visit to the school by BBC presenter Jake Humphrey last month but was honoured on the show on October 25.

He said: "It was a complete surprise. It is fantastic. I am really happy to have won it. It is a really good feeling to be part of something the kids and the whole school can be proud of."

Mr Walton, who lives in Singlewell, joined the school as part of his teacher training 10 years ago and, after a short period away, became a full member of staff in 2001.
