Ms Jones, from Dartford, stood against 42 rival party candidates

Dartford’s Ukip candidate has been backed for a top power slot within the party.

Elizabeth Jones was a comfortable winner in a national popularity ballot of party members to become one of the new intake onto the National Executive Committee.

Ms Jones stood against 42 rival Ukip candidates, the largest number of contenders ever, in the national One-Member-One-Vote ballot which closed on Wednesday, to take one of the top four spots on the leadership and rule-making body for the next three years.

She said: “I am very grateful to all those Ukip members who voted for me and I now intend to introduce some fresh air to the stale corners of Ukip.

“I want much needed change and a fresh broom. I believe in rewarding merit, not time-serving and political correctness.

“I take my responsibilities fully to heart and look forward to a thoroughly good Augean stables clear-out.”
