We need to stop demonising migrants, says MEP

Keith Taylor says it’s time we showed more compassion
Migrants who are trying to come to the UK need to be shown compassion instead of being demonised, a Gravesend Euro MP has said.
Keith Taylor, the Green Party MEP for Kent, was caught in the disruption at Dover yesterday on his way to Brussels and delayed for more than four hours.
An increase in migrants trying to get to the UK from France was reported, and the Foreign Office advised motorists driving back to the UK to keep their doors locked.
But Mr Taylor said: “It was inconvenient being held up at Dover, but this bears no comparison to the misery migrants face on a daily basis at Calais.
“The real crisis here is for those seeking sanctuary, not for the irritated passengers. We have to show more humanity and compassion and I’m shocked by those who have used this crisis as an opportunity to demonise desperate migrants taking desperate measures.
“I have the great benefit of being lucky enough to be born in Britain, but who could say what any of us would do if we were fleeing miserable conditions in unsafe countries.
“Better opportunities for legal access to Britain would be a good response to yesterday’s crisis, as would greater commitment to combating the underlying reasons why refugees flee their country of origin.”
