A FASHION and interior design store could be lining up to take over the former Woolworths store in the town centre.

Ethel Austin Ltd, with its partner Au Naturale, is setting up a new store in Gravesend in the New Year,

Despite a spokesman from the company's marketing department refusing to confirm they were looking at the King Street location, it is thought the unoccupied store is the site of the new shop.

Woolworths stores around the country were hit by the recession at the end of 2008, with the Gravesend Branch closing at the beginning of this year.

Gravesham Borough Council leader Mike Snelling was hopeful that Ethel Austin would chose to let the prominent town centre unit.

He said: "We are still waiting for absolute confirmation of the deal but if it were to be confirmed it would be great news.

"The demise of Woolworths in January left a gaping hole in our town centre and the fact that this large group are looking to set up shop is tremendous. It shows they have a great deal of faith in our retail sector."

Ethel Austin is currently recruiting staff for the store, with adverts posted on their website for an assistant manager's position, manager's position and for a supervisor.

The company stated that it would be able to confirm the location at the beginning of the New Year.
