German supermarket Lidl is planning to open a new 24-hour distribution centre on the former site of Northfleet power station.

Work has begun in Crete Hall Road, where the centre could provide up to 250 new jobs in the area, including office staff, drivers and manual staff.

The chain has been planning to build on the site for about three years, and an application was submitted to Gravesham Council in 2010.

This site will be Lidl’s ninth distribution hub in the UK, and is likely to ease the delivery burden on the nearest depot in Belvedere which stocks stores in the south east.
